How to Order a Martingale

I've added a new option to my Etsy site, as I mentioned in a previous post: a martingale collar. Here's how to order one on Dog Dazzle.

1. Choose the collar you'd like to purchase. Be sure the description says that it is available in martingale. Purchase the collar.

2. Then go to http://www.etsy.com/listing/78088408/order-your-collar-in-a-martingale-style

3. Purchase the martingale upgrade as well.

The pictured collar on the martingale link is a sample of the style, not the collar you will receive.

The Martingale style collar was originally developed for the sighthounds such as the greyhound, whose necks are bigger than their heads. The collar is able to cinch up through the "control loop" and not slip over the head. Recently, it has become popular as a walking collar for all breeds of dogs, as a gentler, or soft choke collar. It should only be used as a walking collar and not left on the dog.

To fit a Martingale collar for a sighthound, measure the dog's neck right behind the ears and at the neck where the collar will rest. The measurements should fall between the listed measurements of the collar.

To fit a Martingale collar for other dogs, make sure to measure the largest part of the dog's head, since the collar has to slip over the head . Also measure the neck where the collar will sit and check to see that the collar expands and closes to fit the measurements of those areas.

I just got back from my vacation at the Greenbrier. I had a great time! It's absolutely beautiful.

According the the website, "CHA Animal Shelter’s annual Picnic with the Pups is our summer gathering at our shelter just south of Westerville. It is a fun filled day that will include many activities for our 4 legged friends and their “guardians”. In addition to our many vendors, demos, and doggie games, this years event will include live music, great food and beverage. It is a free event for the public and a wonderful opportunity for families to come out and spend some time with us.

Events like Picnic with the Pups help us raise money to fund our shelter operations to house, feed, and provide care for our furry friends in need. The shelter is located at 3765 Corporate Drive, near the intersection of Westerville Road and 161 on the northeast side of Columbus."

I'm excited to support such a great cause.

Puppy-Sitting

We're puppy-sitting for a 4 month old golden retriever this weekend for Pilot Dogs, Inc. Jasper is on his way to becoming a seeing-eye dog for the blind. We are just watching him for the weekend while his real raising family is away. He is very well behaved. We'll miss him when he goes back to his real home on Monday, but Jasper is a lot of fun to have just for a few days. Our family has enjoyed being permanent puppy raisers for Pilot Dogs, which entails raising a puppy for one year, but right now it's nice to volunteer our time in a different way by just watching dogs on a temporary basis.

Another New Product--Chain Martingale

I've been hard at work adding new products to my store. Here's my latest!

Surfboards, VW buses, and orchids adorn this chain martingale style collar. The collar is made of woven ribbon sewn to heavy navy blue nylon webbing. The colors of the ribbon are sky blue, light blue and pink. The heavy chain is triple stitched to the webbing with heavy thread. The collar adjusts from 15" to 20".

Wagon Train Dog Collar

The look of the old west and a wagon train are on this dog collar. It's made of woven jacquard ribbon sewn to heavy brown nylon webbing. The colors are gold, tan, gray and black. A black plastic, contoured, side-release buckle and metal D-ring are triple stitched with heavy thread onto the collar for strength. The collar measures 1" wide. There are two available lengths:

expandable between 14" to 20"
expandable between 16" to 24"

It is recommended you measure your dog’s neck to make sure the collar will comfortably fit.

My collars can be machine washed and laid flat to dry.

My Dog Lola

I have two dogs, Bob and Lola. Both are Italian Spinones. There's a very brave bunny in our backyard that loves to come very close to the house. Lola enjoys creeping up on the bunny to see how close she can get before it hops away. She got pretty close the other day! I think this photo is funny--they are both just casually laying in the sun.

I've added a new product to my collection!

This is a martingale collar in pink and green watermelon print. It's cotton fabric sewn on pink nylon webbing. The slides and d-ring are nickle plated and triple stitched with heavy thread for strength. It expands from 14" to 20".

Pet Promise Rescue Run

I had a booth at the 11th annual Pet Promise Rescue Run on Saturday.

"The PetPromise RESCUE RUN & WALK is a 5K run/walk and festival held annually on Memorial Day Weekend at McFerson Commons park in the Arena District promoting awareness of the pet overpopulation problem and supporting efforts to change the future for all homeless pets through education, rescue, sterilization, and adoption.

Over 1,000 people — including those from small local companies, large corporations, parents, pet owners, students, family teams, local schools, and colleges — participated in the 2010 RESCUE RUN & WALK and raised more than $45,000.00 for lifesaving PetPromise Programs & Services!"

It was a fun morning. I love supporting such a worthy cause while having the opportunity to share my handmade dog collars.

Puppy Farrah is Growing

Our guide dog puppy is really growing. She is 4 months old now (quite a devilish age). She's a typical pup and always has to be watched, since we never know what new joy she'll discover that she can get into!

We're working very hard on heeling right now, but the squirrels are so active gathering for the winter and they can be so distracting. We're also working on not jumping on people. She loves everybody and tries to get up close!

Our Pilot Dog Has Graduated

Our family got great news today. Our last Pilot Dog, Darla, has graduated and is paired up with a nice young woman somewhere in the suburbs of Columbus. I know Darla will make a great guide dog. The first picture is Darla at 8 weeks old and the next one with her new owner. I'm so proud of her.

New Puppy

Here is our new puppy. She will be with us for about a year then return to Pilot Dogs, Inc. to begin training as a guide dog. Her name is Farrah. She's 8 weeks old.

A Little About Puppy Raising

My family and I raise puppies for Pilot Dogs, Inc., our local guide dog organization. We do this on a volunteer basis. The puppies come to us when they're about 8 weeks old and stay until they're about 12-14 months old, then return to Pilot Dogs to begin their guide training. Our job is to housebreak, socialize and teach basic obedience.

We've raised 6 puppies, a german shepherd, a yellow lab, 2 golden retrievers, a doberman and a black lab. Not all dogs are able to complete the program. We have 2 goldens that have become guide dogs and our last pup, Darla, the black lab pictured above, is currently in training and hopefully will also become a guide.

It's hard work, but really worth it to know a blind person will be able to become more independent. Pilot Dogs, Inc. is very amazing since they provide all dogs at no cost to the blind person. They are strictly non-profit. I was able to take a blindfolded walk with a trained guide dog on the streets of downtown Columbus and it was one of the most awesome things I've ever done. The dogs and trainers are amazing.

I've started a new venture, making dog collars, and I'm donating a portion of my collar sales to Pilot Dogs, Inc.

My New and VERY FIRST Blog!!

Bear with me. I'm trying to create this blog with very little computer skills. I'm trying to do it without the help of my programmer husband or my kids. It should be a slow process to get it how I'd like it to be, but I'm working on it.

I'll be posting about things happening at home, my new business, Dog Dazzle collars, and things that interest me and, hopefully, they'll interest you too.
